FIFTEEN

THE DOCTOR

FIVE YEARS EARLIER

Baby birds squalled outside on the newly thawed trees that were boasting freshly sprouted leaves. The spring sun’s brilliant rays sliced through the oceanic sky. On a clear night, the stars freckled the darkness, tiny firelights of hot gas in the atmosphere.

So far away and yet closer than ever before.

Wilder stared for so long. She felt more connected to the cosmos, to nature. She needed to find the strength to leave the hospital but knew they wouldn’t release her in her current condition. So, she requested a personal trainer, and that was when she met Briar Carson Rogers, former up-and-coming minor league baseball player. A rotator cuff injury ended his sports career and was the beginning of his new profession.

With Briar’s daily visits to the hospital for moral support and a little motivational coaching, Wilder began eating solid foods. It wasn’t long before her request for Briar to train her was granted, and five days a week, for at least two hours, she was able to leave the hospital. In the first two months, she had already packed on twenty-five pounds.

While she missed Zeus, she knew that he was in good hands, and Wilder needed the time to become the person she always knew she could be. Briar started her off with unconventional Cross Fit training methods to not only rebuild her torn abdominal muscles but her entire body.

“Come again?” Wilder scowled. “I’ve never swung a bat in my life. I haven’t an athletic bone in my body.”

“This’ll help to strengthen your core.” He placed the tips of his fingers on her abdomen.

He handed her a baseball bat.

“Feet apart…there ya go. Now swing as hard as you can at the punching bag. Step into the swing. Remember you draw power from your legs. Step with your left foot, rotate at the hips, keep your back leg planted, and give it your all.”

She botched her first swing. The bat slipped from her fingers, clattering to the floor.

“Keep your grip at the bottom of the bat,” Briar explained. “Open your hips, step forward, and rotate.” He demonstrated proper footing and hip rotation in cadence with his swing.

It took a few attempts until she perfected it, and once she did, it was addicting hearing the bat strike the punching bag with a loud THWAT! She broke several wooden bats until Briar bought her an aluminum one. The first thing she noticed was that her appetite increased as she amped up her weight training regimen. As she filled in, the second thing she noticed was that her gaunt frame was transforming.

“You’ve got great genetics,” Briar had said. “It doesn’t take very long for muscle to show up on you. You’re real lean, and so you build up pretty fast. I can already see great definition. Your strength has also improved immensely. Remember, you couldn’t do one chin-up, and now you just busted out three sets of ten. I’m very impressed, Dr. Wilder.” Briar had encouraged after another successful strength training exercise.

“I’d like to get to five sets of twenty,” Wilder said, stretching her arms.
